Political- People becoming more nationalist-minded; did not like person in another country having authority
>2. Social- Great Schism and Babylonian Captivity had caused decline of church
>3. Intellectual- Renaissance emphasized the individual; Renaissance encouraged questioning attitude (led to doubts about >Cath. Church)
>4. Economic- Many resented Church worldliness; Also resented flow of taxes to Rome (taxes didn't stay in own >country); tithe considered a burden

>Early Unsuccessful Attempts at Reform:
>1.John Wycliffe- condemned weakth and worldliness of Church; Bible is highest religious authority; translated Bible into English; denounced by pope and persecuted
>2. John Huss- ideas similar to Wycliffe; arrested as heretic and burned at stake
>3. Erasmus- attacked Church abuses, but remained Catholic; All of these men failed to reform, but they helped set up for Martin

>Luther >
Lutheranism (Martin Luther)- Justification by Faith- the only path to salvation is to live by faith/ live a good and just life; Ninety-	Five Theses- Questioned doctrine of indulgences, which contrasted justification by faith; posted Theses on the door of a church to open up debate among scholars; Excommunicated by Pope Leo X, but Luther burned the document; Declared an outlaw at Diet of Worms when he would not recant; 1522- began to reform local church in Wittenberg; Lutheranism began to spread rapidly; Teachings of Luther: justification by faith --> Bible only source for Christianity- not pope, two sacraments (baptism and communion), not seven Christian church is not an organization but a group of faithful people; Translated Bible into German so it could be more widely read Diet of Augsburg- presented statement of faith; deemed unacceptable; Peace of Augsburg- gave German princes the right to determine religion of his state (between Lutheranism and Catholicism); Many Scandinavian rulers convert to Lutheranism and establish it as the official state religion

>Calvinism (Swiss Reformation)- Ulrich Zwingli- hoped Cath. Church would reform itself; led church in Zuruch to break from Cath. Church; supremacy of Bible; rejected celibacy of clergy; baptism and holy communion are not sacraments; Zwingli was killed during a civil war;mJohn Calvin- influenced by Luther; became Protestant; agreed w/ Luther about Bible and sacraments exiled from France; settled in Geneva wrote Institutes of the Christian Religion; emphasized predestination- God has determined which people will be saved (the elect) and who will not; elect are blessed with faith in Jesus and good moral values; ended monasticism and celibacy of clergy; church governed by laymen called elders who are elected by the church; renunciation of worldly pleasures; Calvinism became dominant in much of Switzerland; Spread to France - Huguenots are French Calvinists; however, France still mostly Catholic

>~John Knox- took Calvinism to Scotland (called >Presbyterians); became official country religion in 1560

>Anglicanism- >~King Henry VIII of England wanted anullment of marriage to Catherine of , but the pope wouldn't grant it, so Henry VII split w/ RCC; Act of Supremacy- passed by Parliament, declared king to be head of church, not pope; retained most of Catholic doctrine; got rid of monasteries; King Edward VI- made English Church more Protestant; influenced by Calvinism; Queen Mary- attempted to restore Roman Catholicism; persecuted Protestants; Queen Elizabeth- church mostly protestant but governed by bishops; attempted to unite as many subjects as possible; some believed it was still too Catholic; Puritans- wanted to purify church of all remaining catholic elements; Separatists- wanted to leave Anglican church completely; Mary Queen of Scots- plotted against Elizabeth- in favor of Catholicism Anabaptism-; radicals of Protestant Reformation; rejection of infant baptism; opposed taking of oaths and bearing of arms, separation of church and state;

Counter (Catholic) Reformation- >This occurred in defense against the Protestant Reformation >
1. Effective leadership- succession of capable, good popes >
2. Council of Trent- reaffirmed basic Catholic doctrines >~prohibited Church abuses >~clergy renounce worldly pleasures >~ Index of forbidden texts >
3. Inquisition- prosecuted heretics >
4. Society of Jesus- founded by Ignatius Loyola, known as Jesuits; fought >Protestantism >

>Results of the Reformation: >
1. Ended Religious Unity >
2.Religious Wars >
3.Strengthened civil Authority- state gained power at expense of the Church >
4. Encouraged education- Protestantism stressed individual Bible reading >
5. Step Towards religious tolerance (a long term effect) >

>ESSAY 9

a) AGREE > -military dictators -received high rank titles (Cromwell=Lord Protector, Napoleon=high army rank titles and "son of Revolution") - suppressed rebellions (Cromwell=Ireland and Scotland, Napoleon=France
(b): AGREE > - After Fr. Rev. broke out (unstable times), Napoleon came to maturity by putting himself in chief positions: brigadier general and commander of Fr. Army in Italy - Catholic Church=the enemy of Rev. (unstable times), N came to maturity by arranging Concordat w/ Pope recognizing the Catholic Church as main religion of France; (the Catholic Church was no longer enemy with French government) - France did not have a single set of laws, but rather, 300 different legal systems (unstable times); N came to maturity by completing a French codification of laws called the Civil Code= a uniform legal system
c) DISAGREE > - N did not help the cause to become republic - was not liked by many patriots, who were the supporters of the revolution (b/c of his many weaknesses)
d) AGREE > -like Hitler; both hoped Empires would last for centuries; Napoleon's empire collapsed just as quickly as it had formed like Hitler's empire

>ESSAY #1

>FeudalismTheory >When governments ceased to be able to defend their subjects, it became important to find some powerful lord who could offer protection in exchange for service. The contract sworn between a lord and his subordinate is the basis of feudalism.

>Origins >The disintegration of all central authority in the Carolingian world and the invasions by Muslims, Magyars, and Vikings led to the emergence of a new type of relationship between free individuals (Feudalism). >Page 392

Factors that destroyed it >Crusades {1095- 1291}- wakened economic basis of feudalism by awakening European demand for eastern goods; Rise of national states and absolute monarchy- Crusades and feudal wars; Decimated nobility- monarch/ central government regained absolute power >Europe- more or less civilized (mostly opinion) >Less >French Revolution ~Barbaric >Europe became more worldly >ESSAY # 5 >History Essay #5 > >Crusades > >Political and Economic Changes in medieval culture in Europe > > >Basic Review the Crusades: > >Holy Roman Emperor (FALSELY) accuses Muslims of accosting Christian >pilgrims >and desecrating Christian shrines. Tensions are high with Muslim world >anyway, >so the Pope gets together a huge army to go reclaim the holy land. Whoot >Whoot. Anywhoo, promised they would go to heaven if they die, forgiven for >all >sins they might commit..etc. So they go, and all the kings back at home are >happy >because they're getting rid of the feisty young nobles, and the crusaders >actually do reclaim the holy land for a little while before getting run out >by >Saladin's forces. Saladin, unlike the rowdy pope's army, does not massacre >the >women and children. Meanwhile, the Italians are happy because they have new >trade routes. > >I don't know if this is helpful at all, but oh well. Moving on. > >Economic: > >- There was a substantial trade increase between the Europe and the East >that >started with the Crusades >- European demand for Eastern goods greatly increased, goods included: >spices, sugar, silk, rugs, paper, glassware, and precious stones >- To make trade easier, money soon replaced the old system of bartering > >towns soon grew in number and size, and the middle class (bourgeoisie) grew >in wealth and influence >Italian merchants benefited greatly from the increased over-sea trade with >the East, and as a result had much more disposable income >- The Italians spent much of their income on funding the arts- as a result >many Renaissance artists including Botticelli and Michelangelo received >funding >from wealthy Italian families (in their case, the Medici) >- funders included: some popes in Rome, wealthy merchants from Venice, >Sforza >family in Milan, and our favorites, the Medici family in Florence > >Social > >-Education- through the Crusades, Europeans realized the Byzantine people >had >retained a good amount of Greco-Roman knowledge and had many advanced >universities for maths and sciences- people now want to build universities >and pursue >intellectual goals. >- Town craft guilds regulate industry and put talented artisans to work- >many >build beautiful churches etc. >- Guilds improved the quality of living by helping with hospitals, being >active in the town gov, and arranging entertainment >- More and more young people are trained assorted crafts, furthering >knowledge learned > >Political: > >- Strengthened the Kings or Central Governments >- Weakening the nobility- nobles sold lands during Crusades to raise $ for >it, therefore losing their base of feudal power >- Stimulating trade- rising merchant class supported kings, not feudal >lords >because trade requires central authority to provide law and order >- Weakened Serfdom- gave more power to the king because taking away power >of >nobles > >Intellectual: > >Âq Broadened Peoples’ Outlook- Crusaders were exposed to Muslim and >Byzantine >advanced civilizations: powerful gov, great cities, flourishing trade, >prosperous industry, progress in arts and sciences, increased geographical >knowledge; >introduced new ideas upon coming home > >Âq Encouraged Learning- why? Because Byz. and Muslim empires had preserved >and >utilized Greco-Roman knowledge, maintained great universities, and advanced >math, science, lit., and art. > >Âq Educational Activities- stimulated by craft guilds, trained workers; >apprentice, journeyman, and master craftsman > >Âq Towns became centers of culture and learning > >Âq Examples of intellectual though stimulated by Crusades: > >o Roger Bacon > >o Thomas Aquinas > >o Beowulf >Martha Gillon
